Medicare Advantage

Can I try Medicare Advantage and switch back to my supplement?

If you drop a Medicare Supplement to join Medicare Advantage for the first time, a one-time 12-month trial right may let you return without medical underwriting.

If you have Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement and drop that supplement to join a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time, federal law gives you a one-time, 12-month trial right.

If you change your mind during those first 12 months, you can leave Medicare Advantage—even in the middle of the year—and return to Original Medicare.

You generally have a guaranteed-issue right to get the Medicare Supplement policy you had before, provided the same insurance company still sells it.

If that policy is no longer available, you can buy certain other Medicare Supplement plans without answering health questions, and you can also enroll in a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan.

This right ends after the first 12 months, so do not miss the deadline.
