Are Medigap and Medicare Supplement the same thing?

The government gives things two names just to confuse you.

For example, Medigap and Medicare Supplement Insurance are exactly the same thing—literally.

They help fill certain cost-sharing gaps left by Original Medicare and do not have their own doctor networks, so they can generally be used anywhere in the country that accepts Medicare.

Plan G is a common choice and, after you pay the annual Part B deductible, it covers most of the Medicare-approved cost-sharing that Original Medicare leaves for doctor and hospital services, subject to Medicare and policy rules.

But it does not include outpatient prescription-drug coverage, because—good Lord—that would be too easy; that coverage generally comes from a separate Part D plan.
